Everything Fun to Do in Denver This Weekend

Derby weekend is here.

It’s been a long time since anyone’s had an excuse to get decked out in Denver, but that’s all changing now ‘cause it’s Derby weekend, people. Get out there with your dapper suits and flower adorned hats (bonus points for a matching mask)—the juleps will be flowing. And it’s also the last few days of Restaurant Week. And The Big Wonderful is kicking off its 2021 season. And there’s a halfway to Halloween haunted house happening. Time to finally change out of those sweatpants and enjoy the festivities.

Eat all the things during Denver Restaurant Week

Whether you opt for old favorites or use the last few days of this annual celebration of the local dining scene as an excuse to try a new spot, you should definitely be taking advantage of Restaurant Week deals. Some standout options: three courses (get the spicy pork ramen entree) for $25 per person from Ace Eat Serve, four courses of Italian from the recently reopened Coperta for $35, and a lobster roll, fries, clam chowder, and dessert from Maine Shack for $35.
Cost: There are three price levels ($25, $35, and $45 per person) for prix fixe menus so check your favorites for their details

Get scared at a Halfway to Halloween haunted house

13th Floor Haunted House
A haunted house in the spring? Why not. Fans of Halloween horror hijinks, rejoice. The 13th Floor is bringing some spooky spirits out to play for this weekend only. Advance tickets are required so book your time slot now.
Cost: Tickets start at $24.99/person

Burn away your bad spirits on Walpurgis Night

Seedstock Brewery
Walpurgis Night is a Czech holiday celebrating Saint Walpurga and commemorating the beginning of spring. This brewery that specializes in Eastern European beers invites you out to celebrate and officially welcome spring starting at 5 pm. There will be free sausages, plenty of beer, and a little bit of soul cleansing as you write down what you want to leave behind and toss that bad energy right into the fire pit. 
Cost: Free to attend but they’ll also be collecting donations for the Mental Health Center of Denver

Eat even more things during Dining Out for Life

Now through Sunday, May 2
In the past, participating restaurants during Dining Out for Life would make a donation to Project Angel Heart based on a percentage of their sales during that week. This year, you’re asked to support both Project Angel Heart and your favorite local eateries. This annual fundraiser has teamed up with Denver Restaurant Week, with both events happening at the same time. Check out with Dining Out for Life restaurants are also offering Denver restaurant Week deals, then look for ways to give a gift to Dining Out for Life at checkout.
Cost: Depends how often you eat out this weekend

Get dapper and watch the Derby

Union Station
Time to get out your biggest and best hats, people, ‘cause Derby weekend has arrived. Watch the race on bug screens on the patio and in the Great Hall. Seating in the Terminal Bar area opens at noon with the race planned for around 4:50pm. There will also be live music from the Royal Street Ramblers and food and drink specials—yes, there will be juleps.
Cost: General seating in the Terminal Bar is free and first come, first served

Poka Lola Social Club
Over at Dairy Block, Poke Lola’s also getting into the Kentucky Derby spirit with an evening of special cocktails and live music from 4 - 8 pm. Along with mint juleps, they’ll also be serving up Derby Daisies and Hibiscus Highballs, plus there will be special giveaways throughout the night.

Shop, drink, and eat at The Big Wonderful

Saturday, May 1 & Sunday, May 2
Belleview Station
The Big Wonderful is going, well, big for their first event of 2021. Buy tickets in advance for their Derby Weekend Festival and you’ll get access to shopping, live music, craft beer, cocktails, a food truck court, outdoor games, and more. All the festivities will be outdoors and the event is dog friendly, too.
Cost: Tickets start at $30

Shop for spring flowers at a pop-up market

Dairy Block
Urban Roots is popping up in the Dairy Block alley to help you up your spring gardening game. Got those green thumbs ready? Head over to browse their selection of succulents, annuals, hanging baskets, flower flats, herb gardens, and shrubs from 11am-5pm.
